Backstory
7th grade // We took a 30+ hour train trip west from Minnesota to Washington state. We were off to see our aging grandfather who was living with our aunt and uncle. Some time had passed and my dad sensed my boredom. He handed me the family film camera. It was his brilliant plan to keep me occupied and prevent squabbles with my younger brother over who got to play the Pokemon games on the Gameboy.
Camera in hand, I ventured off to the train’s big-windowed observation car and snapped pictures of my favorite scenes of the Montana landscape as they passed by. When we arrived at our destination, my and the camera’s focus shifted to subjects of the farm’s goats and their kids.
As a 13 year old, I was without any technical understanding of the intricate details of photography. However, I had an appreciation for light, shadows, and human interaction. My interest in photography was sparked.
We arrived to visit our family - knowing it might be the last time we saw our grandfather. What we didn’t know was that it would also be one of the last times we’d see both my aunt and uncle.
I still have a photo that my dad took of my grandpa and I sitting together as he gave me a quick hug. While this isn’t a landmark photo, it’s a photo of an in-between moment of this trip, and one of the few captured memories I have left from it.
This is when my motto started:
Take the photo. Always, take the photo.
Capture the world as it is.

20+ years Later
14 years in business // Camera still in hand. I do this work daily - for others, but also to further my curiosity in photography. I’m still taking photos out of the window. I capture the creatures and wildflowers I encounter out in nature, and make sure that our daughter Maeve has photos with her grandparents, aunts and uncles.
My client work is extensive - one day I’ll be covering a nationally televised event for a large corporation, and the next I’ll be walking across a university campus documenting student life, and the day after that I may be at your home, photographing your 6-day-old baby in your arms. This versatility is an asset to my creativity.
I work directly with you, your family, or your design and marketing team to plan your photo session.
For me, photography isn’t about pressuring anyone to perform for the perfect shot. It’s about creating an enjoyable experience that will make it into your long lasting memories and be useful to your business for years to come.

Slater Family Fun Facts
We have a family goal of being outside with our daughters Maeve and Lynnea as much as we can. We love to stroll, hike, bike, camp and even tried kicksledding on a frozen lake. We subscribe to the motto “There’s no bad weather - just bad clothing.” That means we all own a base layer of wool for Minnesota winters.
My husband Mitch and I love to cook. He makes homemade pizza in our pizza oven, and I like to hand make tortellini for our favorite Bologna-style dish, Tortellini in parmesan brodo.
I appreciate having cold brew coffee readily available - but often find three different beverages stacked up at my desk while I work.
I have a thing for trees. Big trees. Itty bitty trees, Mississippi trees, inner city trees...Good thing my husband works for the forest service.
